In 1920 the Australia Government introduced a special rate of compensation for its veterans who returned from overseas service. These service personnel were disabled and could not be employed to work and support themselves or their families. This compensation became known as the “Special Rate (TPI)” payment and it is still granted today to eligible veterans and members of the Australian Defence Forces.

This Compensation is administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

A Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) war veteran who is a member of this TPI Association wears the badge shown above. The Association based in Newcastle, provides care, maintenance and welfare for its members and associate members. It also provides a link between the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to enable all to receive the benefits and concessions they are entitled to.
