Avignon, once the Papal residence, is the chief town of the departement of Vaucluse and the see of an Archbishop. Avignon is located on the left bank of the Rhone River and includes the island of the 'Barthelasse'. The Palace of the Popes and the Cathedral sit on a 190 foot high limestone hill overlooking the city and the valley. Avignon is famous for its history, architecture and the yearly drama festival in July and August.
