The medieval capital of Normandy, Rouen has managed to preserve much of its historic core, despite being turned into a battlefield numerous times.
The battle of Normandy was fought in 1944 between Nazi Germany in Western Europe and the invading Allied forces, as part of the larger conflict of World War ll.
Over 60 years later the Normandy invasion still remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving almost 3 million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy.
The assault commonly known as D-Day started in June 6, 1944 and ended June 30, 1944.
7 floating steel 'pier heads' with extendable legs were set up and linked to shore by four mile long floating roads made of concrete pontoons. Within 6 days, 54,000 vehicles, 326,000 troops and 110,000 tons of goods had been delivered.
